7 Baby Products That Have Evolved

LionessDae. | & Baby Products That Have Evolved!

When I found out about this little lady brewing in my belly I knew I needed to do some research on all the latest baby gear. Little did I know how much things have changed over the years. I mean my younger brother is 23 so the stuff I remember from back then is ancient. Then I thought back to my Godchildren, the oldest is 14 and the youngest 8 (I think) so I thought I knew a little something. Come to find out the things I bought for them are played out too.

Of course I set out to Pinterest, Amazon, Babies R Us and my beloved Target to get an idea of what’s new and improved. I was shocked! I literally had to revamp my way of thinking. Car seats and strollers seem to do so much now! I remember when car seats had the bar that pulled down over the baby’s head!

Car Seats-

So now you can get one that goes from birth to age nine?! Are you serious? This thing is like a Transformer! Who thought this up?…Graco, that’s who.

Exhibit A

Pack & Plays-

Back in the day this was called a playpen. You sat there with a few toys and minded you manners. Or either you were placed here for time out with no toys or because someone else needed to potty. Now days these things can fold up and travel with you, they have bassinets and changing tables attached, the fabric can be removed for machine washing and they have compartments for diapers and such. AMAZING!

Exhibit B

Another Transformer! So you mean to tell me I can purchase a crib for $300 and it will convert to last until this kid goes off to college?! Baffled! Back in the day when a kid was done with the crib it went to the Goodwill/basement/attic/garage until another kid came along.

Exhibit C

I remember bottles having those little bag insert things or just being…a bottle. Now they have all kind of valves on the inside, wide neck, regular neck and they come in different shapes. I literally researched bottles for about a week, decided on Dr. Brown’s, purchased about eight and then read that my baby may prefer another brand! Really baby?!

Exhibit D

Swaddle Blankets-

I remember babies being all wrapped up like burritos in the hospital with a receiving blanket and maybe for a few days at home. I swear (and maybe I’m wrong) these swaddle blankets are a new trend. I have never heard of them until last year. Not to mention the babies in the ads never look comfy. I feel sad for those little babies. I was really on the fence about adding them to my registry and decided against it. I just want my baby to be able to move her little arms if she wants to.

Exhibit E

High Chairs-

I honestly thought babies were placed here to have a meal or watch Mom prepare a meal. Now they recline and have removable and washable parts. And they cost like $150! Really?! I remember a vinyl seat cushion with a removable tray. Graco even makes one that starts as a rocker and ends up as a high chair. What happened to simplicity?

Exhibit F

Swings/Bouncy Seats/Vibrating Chairs-

So these new contraptions look a bit scary. Power motors and such. I remember cranking the swing for my little brother. I know the mamaRoo is highly recommended but it scares me! It’s just too much. I’d be lying if I said I’m totally uninterested in it, I am, I just don’t wanna spend the money for a product that makes me so nervous.

Exhibit G

So there you have it, the products that blew my mind with their advances. I cannot be the only one that feels this way. Let me know if baby products and gear have your head spinning too.

Things have changed! Even from when my kids were babies and they are only 6 and 7. Now you can’t get cribs with a side drop. Crazy!

Swaddle blankets and Dr. Brown’s bottles were lifesavers for us!

Good to know about the bottles, I bought about 10. The jury is still out on the swaddle blankets though.

Being a new mom certainly will be an adventure! With so many new devices and things to sort through, it must get very confusing to know what you want to choose. All the best!!

Love this post. As a parent you just buy what you think your child will need and I never really thought about how all of these items have evolved.

Thanks Sarah! It dawned on my after the fact that toys have probably evolved just as much.

I totally agree… everything has changed! When you mentioned bottles not having the liner anymore I had to stop and think “oh I guess I haven’t seen a bottle liner in a while!”. Haha! I get why they make everything convertible, way cheaper to buy one bed that changes with the kid right? But I remember the thrill of getting my “big girl bed” on Christmas morning and helping Daddy put it together… kind of makes me sad that our kids might not get that. Just change out the rails on their toddler bed and boom… they’re set.

I don’t remember getting my “big girl bed” but I do remember it was a brass daybed and I loved it!

Yes! We have most of these things. The best investment was our carseats, which last until they won’t need them anymore. Also, my twins are now in toddler beds that used to be their cribs. 🙂

I’m on the fence about the car seat. I like the portability of an infant car seat. I think I’ll get the infant now and the convertible one when she’s ready for the next stage.

That’s a most wanted item from my registry! I plan to use it as a bassinet in our room for a few months.
