How I Found Out I Was Pregnant

by | How I Found Out I Was Pregnant

It was a dark and stormy night…sike, I’m just kidding. It was cold as ever though. It was the first Saturday of the year and I was on my way to breakfast with my friend Chelly. We were in the car casually talking about starting our families and I said “I need to be pregnant now!” She said “it’ll happen soon enough”.

A little later we were sitting at the table waiting for pancakes and I refused to take my coat off.
Chelly: You look dumb, take off the damn coat!
Me: Girl please, my boobs are so sore, have been for about a week. I wonder what’s taking my period so long to start.
Chelly: No period babe, you’re pregnant! That’s the first sign! OMG! I’m so excited!
Me: {insert blank-girl bye face} Ok Chelly.

When the food finally came I ate so fast it was unreal. I was full but could not stop eating. These were the best pancakes I’d had in years! Fast forward a bit and we leave. As I was driving Chelly home I had never been so sleepy in my life. The 20 minute ride felt like a road trip. When I finally got home all I could do was hit the couch. Surprisingly I made it to hot yoga a few hours later.

Sunday morning I slept late, got up, had tea and watched OWN. That afternoon B was making a smoothie.
Me: What is that smell?
B: I don’t smell a thing.
Me: Something in that fridge has to go! You might wanna clean it out while you’re in there.
B: Ok. {walks toward me with a bag of spinach} Hey, you think has gone ba-
Me: THROW IT AWAY! Don’t bring that mess near me! It has to go now! Not in the trash can but outside.
B: Ok

Then it crossed my mind, was Chelly right? Naw, just a coincidence. Then I remembered I’d just spent my entire Christmas vacation asleep on the couch…with a bra on to ease the pain. The same pain that I’d been having over a week now. Nope, not pregnant, my hormones have always been outta wack. No need to get my hopes up.

Sunday night I crawled into bed once again wearing a bra. I tossed and turned for about an hour before I finally fell asleep. Then I tossed in my sleep and I screamed! The bra was no longer helping. I was just lying there in the dark with my eyes wide open mentally recapping the past week. I thought “oh sh*t! I’m pregnant!”

Monday morning I woke up tired and confused. I kept trying to figure out if I was dreaming when I came to the “I’m pregnant” conclusion. Then I realized I was wide awake, this is real. I quickly hit Pinterest and searched for pregnancy symptoms. I came across a pin titled “23 Weird, Common and Unique Very Early Pregnancy Symptoms” by Live Like You Are Rich. I had about 12 of the symptoms. It was confirmed.

I spent all day at work on pins and needles. I had a huge secret inside of me, literally. Five o’ clock couldn’t come fast enough! I needed to leave work, fight traffic, stop at Target for a pregnancy test and get home all within five minutes.

When I finally got home and greeted B he hugged me and looked at me kinda strange.

Me: Why are you looking at me like that?

B: No reason. {rubs my tummy}

Me: What made you do that?

B: I’m thinking it might be something in there, is it?

Me: What makes you think that?

B: Well, you’re different. You even look different. And I have never seen you sleep so much in eight years. I’m just saying it’s worth looking into.

Me: OMG! We are telepathic! I think I am so I stopped at the store to get a test. Plus this is about the seventh bottle of water I’ve had today and I swear if I pee one more time…

B: Well go pee, let’s see what it do!

{I’ll spare you some details. I mean I’d like to keep some things private.}

We rejoiced! Him with a glass of wine, me with a bottle of water. I decided I would take the test again in the morning to be extra sure. Yup, another positive result. I even took another Wednesday morning, this time a digital one. Only difference, the word “pregnant” popped up instead of some lines.

We decided not to tell anyone until after it was confirmed by a doctor. Luckily my appointment was set for the following week but this was still gonna be a tough secret to keep. Especially since it felt like everyone around me already knew.

Chelly called my desk to see how I was feeling.

Chelly: How are you? Are you ok? I was worried about you.

Me: I’m good. (trying to keep my cool)

Chelly: Well did you take a pregnancy test?

Me: Why would I do that?

Chelly: To confirm your pregnancy and make an appointment with the doctor. You can’t wait too long on these things. You need to get some prenatal vitamins.

Me: I’m ok. I’ll be fine.

Chelly: Well if not a pregnancy test you need to make an appointment to see what’s going on with you ’cause something ain’t right!

Me: (mumbling) Ok! Ok! Ok! It was positive!

Chelly: OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! I’m so excited! I’m gonna be an auntie!

Me: {slams office door} Shut up! No one knows. I don’t see the doctor til Tuesday.

Chelly: {literally jumping up and down in her chair I could hear it squeaking and her smiling} I’m just so excited!

And the journey began…
